BetterPlace · Workforce management · 2019–2020
BetterPlace builds workforce tools for India's frontline economy, delivery riders, security guards, facility staff. I redesigned attendance regularization so distributed workers get paid accurately for the days they actually work. Absenteeism fell 62%; the sales team drove 5X customer adoption on the back of it.
The problem: for frontline workers, attendance is payroll. Workers move between sites on patchy connectivity; failed check-ins meant lost pay, and fixing the record was so painful that many workers simply absorbed the loss. The "absenteeism" in the data wasn't absenteeism in reality — and it was eroding trust between workers, employers, and the platform.
My role: end-to-end product designer across all three surfaces — the employer's dashboard, the employee's app, and the supervisor's app. Established BetterPlace's first design system along the way.
Make the record visible — workers see their attendance day-by-day, in plain language, on their own phone.
Make the fix trivial — regularization became a guided, few-tap request with clear status, instead of a form-filling ordeal.
Design for reality — a ₹6,000 Android phone, one bar of signal, a first-generation smartphone user. Selfie check-in and face-match verification, no paperwork.
The full walkthrough — dashboard, employee app, and supervisor app — is below.
Where admins configure the system, add workers, assign them to sites, define metadata, manage rosters for shift planning, and handle leave approvals.
Quick check-in with face detection, accurate tracking of working hours and overtime, and easy leave application tracking. Designed for first-generation smartphone users.
Similar to the employee app with added functionalities. Marking other employees' attendance, group attendance, and leave management.
